Graham, Any thing is possible, it take's time and mechanical skill, and a fair degree of ingenuity. Usually the engine has to be turned to give straight thro' alignment and there is a conversion plate required to mate to a gearbox, or you could adopt the motorcycle gearbox, and then you have no reverse. Now what do you want it for ...Road use, then you'll need insurance and they do not like special contraptions as their characteristics are unknown. That said do what you wish it's you car but remember if it's not well assembled then no-one will buy it therefore you have created negative equity. lol Bill
Graham, I have a Kawasaki ZZR 1400 engine now fitted in my Bug Bug but as Ayrbugger said it takes a hell of a lot of time and a very skilled engineer to fit it properly and make all the required parts. It has taken me over two years so far just to get all the right bits bought and built.Every part has been built by a specialist as I do not have the skills required.
The frame is brand new and strengthened, reversing grear box is a Quaiff and very expensive to buy, prop-shaft and limited slip diff is from a 316I BMW and required huge modifications. Independent rear suspension is MGTF.I have spend a lot of time sourcing and taking bits to specialists to be fabricated and balanced.Shocks had to be custom built also by a specialist. To do it really properly is not for the faint hearted as an engine chucking out 200 Bhp will rip standard Bug part potentially to bits. I have had my Bug for 35 years so I thought I would treat her to a proper make over however long it takes LOL.
As a side note I am finally picking up all the powder coated bits next Wednesday so I will post some more pics once it is all back together.
It is very much possible, It has been done before and can be done again. If it is sensable is your call, depending what you are trying to achieve. The Bug is very light and an engine with well under 100BHP will get it over 100MPH. It is far more stable than many people think, if drven properly it has better handling than a lot of 4 wheel cars. Another option that I think you should considder is tuning the Reliant engine. It has huge potential and was used by the 750 motor club for many years in their race series, so there are tuning guides avalale to follow.
karl: Andrea, just seen your post. if you're still looking try putting it in the for sale wants thread.

mybug: Searched and spooled through every image/video/old ad I can find on the internet, I'm thinking that PTO 365M is not around any more. May be resting in a shed, but given the small and tight-knit Bug community, I'd have thought that someone would know it.
