It all depends on your ability to climb through the window.
This was a concern that that Reliant had and is part of the reason that the Bug has the side screens that it has. Also something that our former club chairman has first hand experiance of when a fault with his canopy lock left him stuck in the car.
I have wired my remote control circuits so that they can be bypassed in the boot, by pulling a connector apart and connecting it direct to the live feed.
The hydraulics are hard to bypass without cutting one of the lines and draining the fluid, and even then there would be resistance in the rams.
I can disconnect the rams by removing one bolt from the top of each ram. The end of the ram could be fitted with a quick release pin. Allowing it to ne lifted manualy, it would be heavy without the gas strut, although there is nothing to stop you having the gas strut in place as well.
As you all know I didn't have any side screens untill this year and didn't normaly open the canopy when getting in and out.
surely you would need some form of emergency release mechanism accessible from the drivers seat and also accessible from outside the Bug to cover being locked in or locked out. okay you could climb out the Bug if you removed the side screen but it is by no means easy unless you're built like jimmy krankie or the thing is on fire. it's a great idea in principal especially with there being no pressure on he canopy when it is closed but the issue of ingress and egress in all possible situations needs careful consideration
adl2: cdb15, that's just such a shame that someone let it get into that state. I know that's more than I could cope with but I admit I am slightly tempted. For the VIN, it would end up as a Trigger's broom of a restoration.

burlmeister: Trouble fitting new 6052 fan belt. Alternator adjusted to the max. Belt is on the engine and alt pulleys but I just cannot get it to stretch over the lip of the fan pulley. Is there a trick to this? Driving me nuts!

Jan 18, 2021 15:23:26 GMT
rogeru7: Hi the basic lock is off a Triumph but it will then need a major mod to be used on the Bug canopy unless you have access to a lathe and a mill it’s not an easy mod

mysticmick: hi all . i recently purchased a bug . my dream car for restoration . i have the vin plate . with chassis number and engine number . but sadly no reg number . is there any way of finding out the original reg so i could apply for the v5 .. thanks in advance

cdb15: To Mystic Mick: contact HPI and ask if they will do a VIN-only check. Usually if you have the registration it's £19 or so, but may be different from the VIN. Or there is a DVLA procedure using form V62 - check out the government web site for the procedure.
