Hello people, when I bought the the bug the seller informed me that brake fluid had accidently been splashed on the roof but hadn't been washed off immediately hence paint bubbling across several areas. The prep is hampered as the fluid appears to have eaten into the fibre glass causing star shaped cracking. Would it be advisable to give it a gel coat or might the imperfections still show through, any advice would be appreciated. Secondly, is there someone re- manufacturing canopies? if so anyone got an email address or fone number ? cheers again folks!
There was someone online selling remanufactured canopies but i personally don't have any contact details. If it is just the brake fluid damage that is the problem with your canopy then I would sort your own rather than buying a new one. What is the overall condition of your canopy ? I believe the new ones aren't as well made
All the star cracking and any other stress cracks will have to be removed otherwise they will only reappear after the paint has been applied. I mount a ball carbide burr (about 4 mm diameter) in a Dremel, follow the line of the crack you need to go through the gel coat down to the fibreglass, making sure you grind out past the crack, then remove all the dust and fill in all the shallow troughs
Alreet Roger/ Vannin well I think the canopy apart from the fluid, has been damaged on the driver's side as when closed it sticks out from the about an inch, and when i've finally got the paint removed there's a poor repair, had a look underneath and the nuts holding the hinge to the body are new so I suspect the fella I bought the car from,,, who has several bugs tucked away has done a sneaky swap before I had the car delivered,,,, I'll give your advice a go,,,, cheers again, was looking to cut a corner and shave off a bit of work time,,, I'll get there,,,,,( I think!!!!!) Nice one gents.
What a sneaky trick, if the vendor has done what you say and it does sound like they have, can you not zoom in on the sale pictures and look for identifying Mark's or scratches or stickers in slightly different places to prove they've swapped the canopy to get some kind of redress ? I'd be well hacked off about that !
The Bug is going through to the paint shop at the end of the month for it's final prep, that's when the canopy's coming off and I'll get a proper look and do the necessary work whilst the main body gets a lick of paint, noticed the forward edge shut line is cock eyed and small scratching where it's rubbed against the body, and the receipt for the car "sold as seen"
I'd be wary of painting the body and canopy at different times Barracuda as there is always the chance of paint matching issues. As for "sold as seen" is there nothing in the pictures on the original sales advert to prove they have swapped the canopy as you claim ?
Saw the car in the flesh before I bought it, seemed ok apart from being poorly sprayed with what appeared to be some kind of household paint, wasn't bothered as I knew to get the job right I would be taking it back to the fibre glass and starting from scratch, the guy offered to deliver in with the price if I could wait a week which I agreed, when the car was dropped off it went under a cover for quite a while before I made a start ,as the paint came off ( which has been a real pain) that's when the bad repair came to light and I noticed the driver's side was out of line. Anyway the man of the hour who will be painting the car has suggested Ford Vista Pheonix Orange, or if he can get the paint chip, Reliant Tangerine, looking to get as near as possible to it's original, it's a large spray booth so body and canopy will be done at the same time
I think the Bug looks great in Ford Vista but I also think it’s brighter than the original Tangerine, when I restored my previous Bug it had only been on the road for 4 years the paint was original and not sun faded and was not as bright as the Vista
If you have a question your better of starting a topic in the main forum.

mybug: Anyone know the whereabouts of PTO 365M? It was mine back in the early 80s and some pix have surfaced here (apparently from ebay around 5 years ago) so is it still around?

mybug: Searched and spooled through every image/video/old ad I can find on the internet, I'm thinking that PTO 365M is not around any more. May be resting in a shed, but given the small and tight-knit Bug community, I'd have thought that someone would know it.

heartnut: Quick question: If I fit a Lucas 15/16/18 alternator, is it true that it will heed fibreglass work to fit it as the body is bigger than the original generator?
