Hi all its doubting Dave again looking for more info. I am nearly ready to put the oil back in the engine. First question:-
1 Is it a good idea to use an engine flush before putting fresh oil in, some say leave alone and others say its ok, which do you think is the better option. 2 Can I use Castrol 15/20 GTX oil for old engines as I have been given an airtight unused oil which has been standing for around 18 months or so. 3 I also have some Halfords Classic car 20/50 oil leftover from last year, is it ok to mix these two oils or is this a no no. 4 My last question, if its ok to mix these oils do I mix them together before putting in the engine or put the Halfords in then top up with the GTX.
It may seem silly to you professionals out there, but I want to look after the old girl the best I can and reduce the wear & tear on the engine. Once again look forward for the input. Thanks Guys
If it's an older engine I.e done a few miles then I wouldn't use an engine flush. Also only use a 20/50 good quality (not the supermarket stuff) mineral oil in your Bug. As a general guide, if the oil specification isn't printed on the side if the can then be wary of using it.
The only daft questions are the ones you don't ask not the ones you do
hi dave ,im with vannin on this subject, flushing will do more harm than good on an old engine, iwas told that by mechanic friend of mine who worked for jaguar.the 15/20 oil is far too thin, the engine is designed for 20/50 and Halfords classic 20/50 has addatives for extra protection
Hi Guys, That's answered all my questions, just wanted to double check before I put fresh oil in the engine. I have used Millers 20/50 oil in the past and they were very good, but as I have some Halfords classic 20/50 left over I will stick with that. Still waiting for the starter motor to arrive so I am a bit stuck at the moment ,but will get back on it as soon as it arrives. Just got back home from a blast in my Mini, and it was so refreshing to get out and about for a few miles round my local area. Hopefully Karl and the crew can get these shows going again, if restriction's allow. Thank you all for the replies it has been very helpful. Happy Bugging

mybug: Anyone know the whereabouts of PTO 365M? It was mine back in the early 80s and some pix have surfaced here (apparently from ebay around 5 years ago) so is it still around?

mybug: Searched and spooled through every image/video/old ad I can find on the internet, I'm thinking that PTO 365M is not around any more. May be resting in a shed, but given the small and tight-knit Bug community, I'd have thought that someone would know it.
