I little while ago I explained that I had lost a wheel in some strange circumstances.
Well my problem now is that when I got it home I thought a would look for damage, which there was none fortunately.
However I did notice that the inside of the drum was wet and the shoes where contaminated with oil. So I came to the conclusion that the 1/2 shaft oil seal must need replaceing.
After removing the 1/2 shaft I noticed that the pressed on coller which the oil seal runs around is marked which is most likely why the seal failed in the first place and would do again.
So now I am after someone who could replace the bearing and the collar or get hold of a replacement 1/2 shaft, passengers side. Not sure if they are handed or not.
Can anyone help please.
I thought there was someone down country who had loads of bugs which were being used for parts, would anyone know who this person is and his number. Or is the rear axel the same as any other car which I could look for a replacement from?
It's not a difficult job for any engineering shop to press the old collar and bearing off and press a new one on and for maybe £20ish or that's what my local guy usually charges me. There were two types of Bug axle reliant used and off the top of my head I can't remember if the shafts are interchangeable or not but what I will say is if you do replace the half shaft try and get the same side shaft, using a secondhand shaft from the opposite side, the twisting forces will be in the opposite direction on the shaft to what has been applied to it and it's not uncommon for the shaft to fail in these circumstances and you'll have another rear wheel overtaking you.
Hi I have just put a post on wants for halfshaft and then I noticed this post. I cant stop mine from leaking i thought the collar was the problem as pitted, bought a new one the old one and the new one came off and went on to easy I think my shaft has been sanded or something theres too much play so I need a driver's side shaft we need someone with a axle so we can have 1 shaft each. Does anyone know if any other reliant shaft fits thanks
The bearing is a standard item and will be available at about £17 each, no idea on the collar although it’s a very simple item so if none are available a small machine shop will be able to knock one up for you

rogeru7: Hi the basic lock is off a Triumph but it will then need a major mod to be used on the Bug canopy unless you have access to a lathe and a mill it’s not an easy mod

cdb15: To Mystic Mick: contact HPI and ask if they will do a VIN-only check. Usually if you have the registration it's £19 or so, but may be different from the VIN. Or there is a DVLA procedure using form V62 - check out the government web site for the procedure.
