And breathe 🙂 Firstly Dean are you using the original type of gearbox (hydraulic clutch) ? Or has it been converted to the cable type ? Secondly where are you based ? Thirdly get it in the air and get the knackered gearbox out. Much better it's happened now than next week. Worth taking the stick out first just incase that's the problem
I have put down the lump hammer for a moment, the car may have a last minute pardoned after all.
At first look it seems that the round spring / locking loop may have come off at some time recently. Which is why the whole gear knob is just flopping around.
If thats the case it should be an easy fix as I have already order a replacement this morning.
However looking at the stick its self, you have the ball at the bottom. Now it looks like it should have 2 lugs coming out of it, one each side, which sit in the slots on top of the box. but mine only has one lug and a hole on the other side.
Can anyone tell me if that is correct or not please ? Also if correct, does it matter which side the lug sits when putting it back together. As I don't make a note of it when pulling it all apart at 7 o'clock this morning.
There should be 2 lugs which locate the lever to the gearbox lid, from the sound of it you may be very lucky and replacing the C clip will sort out the problem, just make sure the 2 small holes in the spring retainer lines up with the 2 small holes in the gearbox cover
Ady bug club regalia isn't a million miles from you, sure he can give further advice if needed. If it makes you feel any better we've had my engine out 4? Times over last few weeks and guess what will possibly be happening tomorrow.....
Thank you all for being so interested and "Yes" the old Bug did make it there and it was brilliant to see so many other there as well.
I don't think any of them were exactly the same to be honest, which just shows what a adaptable little car it is and what can/is done over a period of 50 years.
After arriving I did notice that the side lights for some reason has stopped working, which I thought may be a fuse. Someone kindly offer up a fuse to me however that was not the issue as they were all fine.
So again after someone gave me a small piece of wire I back feed the side lights straight from the battery to the rear lights, which sorted the problem to get home.
We drove home at between 50-55MPH with no problems what so ever and after a few comfort stops arrived 4 hours later none the worse for wear.
So happy to be a bug owner again and the lump hammer has been put away for good.
Figures crossed. Cheers all and thanks to everyone. Dean.

rogeru7: Hi the basic lock is off a Triumph but it will then need a major mod to be used on the Bug canopy unless you have access to a lathe and a mill it’s not an easy mod

mysticmick: hi all . i recently purchased a bug . my dream car for restoration . i have the vin plate . with chassis number and engine number . but sadly no reg number . is there any way of finding out the original reg so i could apply for the v5 .. thanks in advance

cdb15: To Mystic Mick: contact HPI and ask if they will do a VIN-only check. Usually if you have the registration it's £19 or so, but may be different from the VIN. Or there is a DVLA procedure using form V62 - check out the government web site for the procedure.
