So it was all going so well. Had the bug for a few weeks and all fine. Took it up to a show last weekend and it was a little reluctant to start but we got back. Now the engine turns over but will not start. Could be all manor of things I know! Plugs seem ok and the coil is ok (I think) but I have new plugs, leads and coil on the way just in case. The plugs are wet though which I though was just flooded and there is fuel going into the carb. Is there anyone in the Hearts, Beds, Cambs area who might be able to assist? I can hand it over to the local garage but would prefer to have an expert on side. Happy to cover all expenses. HHV 505K 850cc Electronic Ignition 6v sport coil with ballast.

Be really careful handing it over to a garage, that's something I would never ever do. Make sure all your ignition components are quality parts and not any of this modern junk made from potato's in India.

Checking the basics Is there a spark at the plugs, how old is the fuel as modern petrol does not last that long before it starts to contaminate the carb and ruin the seals.

Take out the plugs and dry them off. Good scrubbing with a wire brush and check the gaps are OK. Electronic ignition so all should be OK there. DON'T fit all your new parts yet as that's changing too many things at the same time. Take off the air filter (or just remove the filter element)and see if it will start. If it does, your air filter was choked.
If the air supply is OK, check that the HT leads are each giving a spark when the engine is turned - remove all plugs, have assistant turn the engine and hold each HT lead end in turn close to the cylinder head - about 2mm away. If you see a spark the HT lead is good (also the coil and distributor). Then repeat with each plug fitted to its HT lead, holding the plug earth electrode about 2mm from the cylinder head.
It's possible that the distributor has shifted on its mounting. If the above shows all the sparks are OK, and there's no air blockage, and you know fuel is getting through, then the only possible problems left are either the fuel is wet/dirty/you actually filled up with diesel by mistake, OR the timing is wrong.

Hi - the engine caught yesterday and was running but tried again this morning and it turns but will not catch. Checked the sparks and this time no spark at the plugs. Got to head to the USA for a few days tomorrow so I will start the process of tracing back on my return.
While I am here - what are folks using as best practice for petrol? I topped up last time out with BP Ultimate.
I have a classic car specialist not to far from here (Letchworth) so might call on them if all else fails.
If there are any club members in the Herts Beds Cambs area with a keen mechanical skill, I would certainly welcome their help.
