Did the original Bug have any reinforcing plates moulded into the bodywork to support the main canopy hinges (the Mini lower door ones) and the adjacent wing mirror mounting, or anything in the front edge of the canopy itself to strengthen the main hinge mounting?
Thanks

yes chris,
They tend to rust and bubble up over the years. Normally if there is a problem you can see where they are. there are 2 on the lower canopy and 2 on the body. Not sure about Mirrors - think they just bolt though but I would add some from the underside.

Hmm... that's a little worrying. My magnet tells me there isn't anything on my Webster, the hinges seem just to screw through the GRP to a nut and washer (and not a very large one at that!) on the underside. Methinks I will get some plates made up to fit on the underside of the bodywork. The canopy itself is a bit more of a problem. Maybe penny washers and rubber washers between them and the GRP.
Any other Webster owners out there who know?
Thanks

I'm not sure what Mike Webster did with his hinge design. Its dead easy to extend the bolts on the hinge and plate the body on the underside. The canopy ones would be more problamatic.

Yes there are steel plates inserted and bonded into the hood and body as re-enforcement for the hinges, if there are bubbles or a raised portion around the hinge the only proper way to sort it out is to cut them out and replace them
