The sender in the 700 and 750 engines as originally fitted to the Bug was a different resistance to the 850 from later Reliants. It you have an original Bug gauge and the sender from an 850 (could be the whole engine changed or just the sender) you will get a miss match. The best thing to do is fit the correct sender to match the gauge. I know Bug Spares can do these. You can put a resister in the line to make the correction but I wouldn't know which one to use.
Having said that the gauge is never very accurate and a lot of people fit an aftermarket one with a matching sender. Which solves all compatibility issues.

Mine would always read hot with any sender, I made sure it wasn't overheating with a digital thermometer and soldered a resistor in line to make it read correctly. I can't remember what sizeit was. I tried a few in before I found the right one. You can get a bag of various sizes from maplin for pennies. 15 ohms seems to ring a bell, but I'm sure Each instrument will be different.

Yes an inline resistor is the way forward as the original temp senders are getting hard to find,we at BBSS only have a good S/H one which we are holding on to for our Bugs should they need one.I did spot one on e bay but it's going for just short of 50 quid. The correct part number and type is AC DELCO 7966195 I also have a note which refers to an AC DELCO SU 13 as used on the Bedford C.A vans, good luck with finding one. Dave BBSS P.S I've tried all the others on e bay which say they are good for Reliant Regals, not found a correct one so far.

Same here Dave I bought one early in the year which was advertised as suitable for a Regal or Bug plus various other cars , but it reads too hot . The one I bought before that one hardly moves from cold .

Hello I had the same problem, I emailed a seller on eBay and he listed 3 @ £17.99 I obviously bought one , but feel it’s important for enthusiasts to get them rather than traders. Good luck Terry
