Has anyone fitted one of the kits available that replaces the distributor, points, etc.
I have the 700cc engine and the original distributor at the moment.
Does anyone have an idea of which kit/distributor number I might need. Thanks

Hi Phil I will let you know this evening when our Azzy finishes his shift, he fitted one to Elvis Bug also a 700cc and we've not had any issues with it been running for about 5 or so years, it has also improved the hot starting issues by eliminating the condensor. John Dave Bond Bug Spares

Did any reliant ever use a distributor using a cap that had the leads going into the side and not a dome on the top ?
I bought a kit from Accuspark who sent a side fitting cap and leads with only one end having plugs, they insist it is the correct fitting.
They have sold hundreds to Reliant owners who are all happy ? so they say.

Phil I bought the Accuspark set recently. It was a set for any car with that distributor and was the leads plus cap and rotor arm. Wasn't side entry cap though, it was top entry with plug on leads. You have to fit the plugs to the distributor end of the lead, but that is really easy to do you just crimp them up with some ordinary pliers. you can cut the leads to any length so you end up with them exactly right.

Accuspark appear to have received the ones I have sent back soI'm now awaiting the replacements. Not anything you told me Dave, this is all down to Accusparks mistake.

I had the electronic ignition fitted today, new coil, distributor, leads, and plugs.
It's so much smoother and responsive.
Well worth doing in my opinion.

The accuspark kit I fitted will fit several Bug / reliant engines.
A list of fitments is available on their website.check the fitment to get the right one.I ordered the wrong one to start with.
It's all fitted now and has made a difference.

I had a few problems with them a couple of year ago when I ordered a new distributor for my Bug . When I fitted it I could not get the timing right as I had to turn it so far the vacuum advance was touching the engine and the timing was still out . So I took it out and tried turning it 180 degrees I then had the same problem with it jamming up against the body work . I called them and told them I thought the drive peg at the bottom had been drilled in the wrong place . They would not agree and said I would have to talk to their technical expert who was away . I then had a long wait until he returned . He did not understand/accept what I was saying . After about two weeks of getting frustrated by it all they agreed I could send it back and they would check it . Surprise surprise they agreed it had been drilled in the wrong place . They then sent me a replacement which was fine except the replacement was an electronic ignition type and not points as I had ordered . All in all a very frustrating experience . Still the end result meant at least the Bug would finally start and run . A sense of humour is compulsory with Bug ownership I think .

I bought one for FGU and initially it was fine but as soon as the engine was well hot (on a long run) it would miss and generally misfire. I took the bloody thing out and went back to points. Still have it in the shed gathering dust somewhere.

That is why I stuck with points . Easy to diagnose if you suspect a fault and easy to fix .
