Is it possible to swap the Zenith carb for an SU unit?
I don't own a Bug at present but I like to do my homework and prefer to have at least one option.
Hope you guys can help.

You can fitt the SU as used on the Robin. Because it sticks up further from the engine than the Zenith, you would need to either cut a small hole in the engine cover, or add a hump to it, or fit it on a custom inlet manifold to get it lower. The other alternative carb is a Webber 32 or 34 ICH. Which fits to the same inlet manifold for the Zenith. Both changes are commonly made.

Hi Rogeru7 I have a Weber carb on the Bug at the moment, and the filter housing does fit, but I found you might have to fit a small spacer nut or similar for it to tighten up on the carb. I prefer the Weber than the Zenith as I noticed quite a bit of improvement and more responsive. My original Zenith was old and tired and had a bent needle so if the Zenith had been newer maybe it would have been ok. But after sayin' that I have had a few issues with fuel evaporation and I have got a replacement Zenith to try and solve my problem, I have to wait and see. Also have a spare Weber carb if anyone is interested, which I may revert back to if things don't improve. Also with a Weber you have to change the choke cable to opposite ends. Weber parts are easier to get than Zenith ones, its what works best for your Bug really.

One other thing to consider is the Weber will be heavier on juice than the Zenith and S.U not that any of them use a great deal

hi all carb came today guess what it don't fit.it is an aftermarket one for a land rover but the manifold holes are way too far apart ,also the butterfly operates in the opposite direction so I have sent it back,my zenith carb works ok I just need to fit a new float needle valve as mine sticks.tried to get a grose ball bearing type but cant get one with the correct thread

If you keep your eye on ebay the Weber 32ich carburettors come up for sale quite often and sometimes reasonably priced Steve How much are new ones these days from webcon ? There is also a fiesta breakers somewhere in the country that would surely have a selection of carburettors

hi vannin, the zenith carb I have works ok as I rebuilt it with a kit from burlen fuel systems.the only problem I have had is I got some dirt get through even though everything has been replaced on the fuel system,so I have fitted a big in~line filter, the needle valve tends to stick but I can replace that for about a tenner.the carbs on webcon I looked at were a 32ict for £160 some similar were about £250.the carb I got from rimmer bros was less than £50

hi nobla, thank you ever so much for the offer of a carb, but I have decided to stick with the zenith. as I have said the swap was really more of an experiment to see if the rimmer bros one fitted.i have to say it looked decent quality especially for £46 thanks once again nobla it was a very nice and thoughtful gesture

Hello Steven, May be able to help you out with a Weber, pm me for details Hi would it be possible for you to give me details on the Weber carb regards roger Hello Roger, I have a spare Weber at the moment, its not been on my car so I cannot say its in working order, but after say'in that it all seems ok I was going to keep it for spares but Ivan has supplied me with a refurb Zenith so hopefully it will not be needed. If it will get you out of a mess I will let it go. I can use the Weber that's on at the moment if the Zenith isn't up to scratch. The snag I have at the moment I cannot get the Bug to my mates garage to do the work so that's been put on hold for a couple of weeks so if you want to get back to me, or I can email you when things progress if you are not in a hurry or leave a pm message for me.

hi roger, the carb in question is not a weber but an aftermarket one for a series 2 landrover, that is why I asked the question about which vehicles they were fitted to.the carb is from rimmer bros part number erc 2886p ,priced at £46.80 under series 2 l rover carb section
