Being new on this Forum and almost as new to Bugs I hesitate to reply, as I expect there is some well-known (but not to me!) expert somewhere who does this sort of thing before breakfast. But putting that aside, my suggestion would be to contact Joe Mason. I've actually met Joe as I was contemplating getting a Tempest (I didn't, I got the Webster instead) and in the process inspected several at his workshop in Worcestershire. The Tempest has a seriously tight engine bay so not unlike the Bugs in that respect. Joe reconditions engines (and just about anything and everything else too) for the small Reliants, so he would be able I imagine to give you *his* price for this work. Certainly he has the facilities, expertise and support staff to undertake the work. Whether he would or not, at a price acceptable to you, is another matter. But a chat might give you a lot of useful information. His web site even lists engine and gearbox as parts items here: www.reliantspares.com/parts-list/If you're going to shell out serious money for all this, Joe also does a tasty line in engine bling, such as a 4 into 1 tubular manifold which apparently gives noticeable extra bhp. More importantly, I have it on good authority that this will fit within the confines of the Bug engine bay. He also does things like disc brake conversions, and other tuning goodies.

Get a b axle as well, you won't look back....I've considered that, but 50mph is plenty for me as I usually take my son on short journeys in it. Also, a B axle might make it harder to do power slides!

Not about going fast just makes a nicer and quieter drive. Also have the extra poke if required.

I understand what you're saying, but after a lot of thought I'm sticking with my a axle. From experience I know that the faster, more comfortable and quieter a car is, the faster you end up going. I need to do everything I can to keep my speed down to stay safe. My everyday car has 210bhp and will do 150mph, consequently it feels very slow at anything under 100. My most exciting car to drive was a Suzuki wagon r as you could drive it hard and stay within the speed limit, especially in the snow!

for lots of short journeys it has to be the standard Bug axle lots of longer runs and fit a "B" axle, horses for courses. every modification on a car has it's pros and cons it's just working out what's best suits YOU

I'll be doing short journeys only. Just had my MOT and the tester said my 750 engine sounded good compared to the 850s he tests so that has convinced me to keep it, even if I have to replace the head gasket.
