So I've worked out my overheating problem is due to a broken water pump. My car has the 3 bladed plastic fan and is missing a thermostat. I have the thermostat(working), 4 bladed metal fan and water pump from another broken engine. Will any of these be better than replacing with new? Thanks

It should'nt make much difference not having a thermostat fitted. The water pump from either a 4 bladed or 3 bladed will fit ok but the blades are not interchangeable as there mounted with a different number of bolts onto the shaft. If I were you I would fit a 3 bladed version.

Thermostat should be fitted ...it serves to restrict the water flow slightly thus forcing the water pump to work pushing water right round to the back of the block and head otherwise there's a water path short circuit and only the coolant from the front of the engine will be circulated.

personally I'd fit a new waterpump as it is a pig of a job to change with the engine in situ
