I am toying with the idea of switching to an alternator.
My Bug is a 1972 700 ES with original dynamo.
Is it possible to get a replacement unit which will slot straight in or will I have to get brackets and things to make it fit...?
Any info appreciated.

Expensive way of doing this is to buy an alternator that is built into the dynamo casing - you'll find adverts for these in the classic car mags etc. Fitting a Lucas LCR17 is also possible ...it'll fit - Bugs with alternators from new had a bulge put into the engine enclosure GRP to accommodate the larger diameter of the alternator but its generally held that this modification is not actually required. Main terminal connections can be bit close to the exhaust pipe and some owners have put a heat shield in place by adding a suitable extension to the existing heat shield. You'll have to make reconnections at the voltage regulator but once done the voltage regulator can be removed and the various short circuits and reconnections pushed back inside with the main loom. You'll need a spacer for the main bolt and the bracket at the top is different but these come up on EvilBay from time to time

a dynamo is up to the job on a bug as there is so little in the way of electrics unless yours is loaded with all kinds of aftermarket extras I'd stick with a dynamo which it's had for 45 years
