Can anyone hazard a guess please as to what this might be? Specifically, the black gloop? It's on the underside of my engine cover, but only on the side next to the passenger footwell. Is this a standard Bug feature? Is it sound insulation, or thermal? And as it's clearly slumped, should I just scoop it up and bin it? What do other folks do or have with their engine covers ? Do they do anything? All thoughts and inspiration gratefully received. Thanks

What ever it is its not supposed to be there . Looks like an after market heat or sound deadening stuff. Looks like the cover has a bulge added for a different carb to.

It's a Webster, and the bulge is for the 850 engine air filter I think. I haven't yet removed the bulge to see if it actually does anything Thanks for your comment, I think I'll try to scrape it all off, it's obviously not fit for purpose anyway since it's slumping so much - thermal insulation that... er... melts...
